Google, the renowned technology giant, paid tribute to the exceptional Nigerian educator, ceramicist, glassworker, and potter, Ladi Kwali, through a special Doodle feature. This celebration aimed to recognize her remarkable contributions to the world of art and her role in introducing the international community to the captivating beauty of Nigerian art through her intricately adorned earthenware designs.
Google’s decision to honor Ladi Kwali with a Doodle coincided with the opening of an exhibition showcasing her works at the Skoto Gallery in New York, amplifying the significance of this event.
Ladi Dosei Kwali, the gifted potter, was born in Kwali, Abuja, Nigeria, around 1925. Growing up in a family of potters, she acquired her foundational knowledge of pottery, specifically the coil and pinch methods, during her childhood under the guidance of her aunt. With time, she developed and refined her own distinctive style.
In 1954, Kwali joined the Abuja Pottery Center, where she etched her name in history as the first Nigerian woman to receive advanced training in pottery techniques. By 1960, her talent and expertise had garnered global recognition, leading her to exhibit her masterpieces across Europe and America, captivating audiences and earning international acclaim.
